Das zu lat. persona »Maske; Schauspieler, Mensch« (vgl. Person) gehörende Adjektiv spätlat. personalis »persönlich«, das als solches bei uns in Zusammensetzungen wie »Personalpronomen« »persönliches Fürwort« lebt, entwickelte im Mlat. die Bedeutung »dienerhaft« (nach entsprechend mlat. persona »Diener«). Aus dem substantivierten Neutrum Singular mlat. personale stammt unser Fremdwort »Personal«, das noch um 1800 in der Form »Personale« gebräuchlich war. Es bezeichnet heute einerseits die Gesamtheit der Dienerschaft, der Hausangestellten (beachte die Zusammensetzung »Hauspersonal«), andererseits gilt es insbesondere im Sinne von »Belegschaft, Angestelltenschaft«. – Aus dem Neutrum Plural spätlat. personalia »persönliche Dinge, Lebensumstände einer Person« wurde im 17. Jh. in der Rechtssprache Personalien »Angaben zur Person wie Name, Lebensdaten usw.« entlehnt.
